For people. For nature. Forever.
Join us for our 2021 Member Picnic & Annual Meeting. We're excited to celebrate our 43rd anniversary with you! Activities, food, fun, hikes—Come meet new friends, relax by the river, and explore the magnificent Rogue River Preserve!
Members can also help to chart an updated course for leaders of SOLC, as we will vote to amend SOLC’s Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws to reflect the way we select board members. If you are a current member, you should have received information on this by mail, and voting before the meeting is also possible.
Lunch is on us! *
Choice of guided hikes and activities: hike the fairy forest or new meadow loop, nature journaling by the river, bird walk, fire ecology hike, and more. Groups will be divvied up at the event.
Note our NEW Proof of Vaccination or Negative COVID Test policy for this event. Read details here.
2021 Conservation Award: Join us as we honor SOLC founder Dave Garcia for his lifetime of contributions to conservation. Dave was a founder of SOLC in 1978 and served as the treasurer of the founding Board. In the 1970s he also founded the Siskiyou Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Oregon (of which he is still active and is past President, and currently serves on the statewide board). Just this past year, Dave successfully worked through the legislative process (including providing testimony) to get funding restored for The Oregon Native Plant Conservation Program which had not received funding to update the State's endangered species list for over twenty years. Dave started the Irene Hollenbach Wildflower Memorial show that is put on annually every July 4 in Lithia Park. He has been an activist for the environment his whole life, not just for one area of nature, but for all of it. From driving an electric car, biking miles to work when teaching in Eugene (up some of the highest hills in the city), growing his own food and running a CSA, lobbying in Salem to prevent the installation of the LNG pipeline, to living a life rooted in the protection and preservation of the natural world, Dave has always put the environment as his top priority in terms of his time, focus, and commitment. It is the core of who he is.
Dave worked as a high school biology teacher for more than 20 years turning youth on to the wonders of nature and the importance of protecting it. In retirement he worked for the BLM as a Table Rock Interpreter taking students up the rock four days a week. He also did this for SOLC. Dave is a favorite hike leader with SOLC and other groups. He volunteers for KS Wild, Rogue Valley Audubon Society, High Desert Association, Native Plant Society of Oregon, and SOLC.
We hope to see you there! RSVP by Monday, Sept. 27th.
