Family Fun Open Lands Day at Rogue River Preserve

REGISTRATION opens on May 18 at 6 a.m.

Enjoy a day on the land with the whole family by visiting the Rogue River Preserve during our Family Fun Open Lands Day.

The Preserve includes two miles of Rogue River-front, a large floodplain forest, and oak woodlands with meadows. The Preserve is occasionally open to the public during guided hikes, special events like Open Lands Days, and for local schools groups. Explore the trails, unguided, or join experts for a guided fun educational hike. We'll also have self-guided activities for families and individuals to take on the trail.

To limit crowding on the trails, we require pre-registration for specific time slots. Guided Hike participants are welcome to explore the property before or after their hike slot.

  • 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. - Self-guided Explorations. check out kids activities, field guides, binoculars and other gear from our lending library, and chat with docents along the trail to learn as you explore. Up to 30 visitors

  • 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. - Guided Reptile Hike. Up to 15 visitors

  • 1 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. - Guided Butterfly Hike. Up to 15 visitors

Reptile Hike: Lizards and snakes and turtles, oh my! Join SOU Professor of Biology Dr. Michael Parker on a two-mile exploration of the Rogue River Preserve to search out resident reptiles. This hike includes a visit to a secluded slough to look for western pond turtles as well as an exercise in flipping cover boards. Attendees may encounter an assortment of scaly critters including alligator lizards, western skinks, garter snakes, and yellow-bellied racers.

Butterfly Hike: Led by Naturalist and Lepidopterist Linda Kappen, learn how to carefully catch butterflies with nets and identify them. In this family fun event, you will gain insight to the life of butterflies in southern Oregon.

As much as we love our furry friends at SOLC, pets are not allowed. SOLC does make exceptions for ADA service animals. Companion animals, however, are not allowed.
