At this year’s Landmark Member outing on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021, guests enjoyed touring part of a newly-conserved property, 159-acres along Kanutchan Creek in Eagle Point. Landmark Members, Legacy and Life Donors participated in staggered, small-group guided walks throughout the day and a nice meal.
Lands like this in the Rogue River region serve as ideal lower elevation deer and elk habitat, and as refuges for wildlife like cougar and California Quail. These rolling hills of oak savanna and denser woodlands, mixed with meadows, buckbrush chaparral, and evergreen forest, streams and ponds, are now conserved thanks to you.
Our sincere gratitude goes to property owner Sandy Pearson for hosting us on her land, which was significantly impacted by last year's Obechain Fire. As you may know, Sandy is selling this land, but because of the newly created conservation easement, SOLC has the honor and responsibility to steward this natural area in perpetuity. We also have the unique opportunity to observe and learn from it as it regenerates. Sandy's property helps to remind us of the importance of disturbance and renewal, of which wildfire is a part. The recovery from the wildfire brings to mind the saying: tall oaks from little acorns grow.
Speaking of fire and recovery, shout out to Banyan Botanicals for donating their Lung Revive liquid extract that we included in the goodie bags handed out at the event. We are also grateful for the terrific volunteers who helped to make the day possible. Be sure to check out the event photos below taken by the talented, and always generous, Volunteer Linda Thomas!
