Start the new year by enjoying a beautiful property: the Rogue River Preserve. The Preserve includes two miles of Rogue River-front, a large floodplain forest, and oak woodlands with meadows. The Preserve is occasionally open to the public during guided hikes, special events like Open Lands Days, and for local schools groups. Explore the trails, unguided, or join experts for an educational and family fun short hike at 12:00 about vernal pools - seasonal wetlands that support abundant life, including very rare plants and animals.
To limit crowding on the trails, we require pre-registration for specific time slots. You can register for both the Self-guided Exploration and Guided Hike or for just one activity:
10:00 - 2:00 - Self-guided Explorations; check out field guides, binoculars, and other gear from our lending library, and chat with docents along the trail to learn as you explore. Up to 30 visitors
12:00 - 1:30 - Guided Vernal Pool Walk. Up to 15 visitors
Vernal Pool Walk: Dive into this pool-side walk with SOLC Education Program Manager Tara Laidlaw and SOLC Land Steward Rebekah Bergkoetter to learn about the temporary waterbodies at the Preserve. We'll talk about the landscape requirements for vernal pools and the amazing wildlife that rely on them. Staff will provide nets and trays to help take a closer look at life in the pools. Please wear waterproof boots for this adventure.
For everyone's safety, all participants will be required to wear masks and maintain a 6’ distance when interacting with individuals outside their household group. In addition, we will observe all state-mandated COVID precautions.
As much as we love our furry friends at SOLC, pets are not allowed. SOLC does make exceptions for ADA service animals. Companion animals, however, are not allowed.
If you have questions about the day, contact Teresa Fernandez at 541-482-3069 Ext 107 or email her.
